School Resource Officer
The School Resource Officer program is nationally accepted and involves the placement of a law enforcement officer within the educational environment. The officer, while in school, is involved in a variety of functions. Besides being an active high profile law enforcement officer on campus, the SRO is also a resource for students, parents, teachers, and administration regarding issues of law, counseling or other school provided services. Working hand in hand with the administration and staff at each school, the SRO will endeavor to create, maintain, and build rapport and a safe educational environment for students, teachers, and staff. The SRO also performs "security" type duties and has not been placed in a school in response to a crisis situation, but rather acts as a comprehensive resource for his school.
The sheriff's office SRO program currently provides this service for Boyden-Hull JR/SR High School, Western Christian High School, MOC Elementary School in Hospers, Boyden-Hull Elementary School, Hull Christian School, Spalding Catholic School in Alton, the Netherland Reformed Christian School in Rock Valley and Unity Christian High School in Orange City.
Deputy Waylon Pollema serves as the School Resource Officer for the sheriff's office. If you wish to email Deputy Pollema for any program requests or any other issues with the SRO program, you may contact him here: [email protected]
