Happy Independence Day from the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office

While most people are firing up their grills and icing down their cold drinks, about a million of us badge-wearing, oath takers are putting on our vests, duty firearms, heading out the door for our shifts and turning the key on a patrol vehicle. So are many EMS workers, firemen/women, and emergency workers. ❤️🇺🇸💙Take the time to thank them for protecting our freedoms.
Many Sioux County families are still reeling from the recent flood devastation. Their celebration might look much different this year. There is loss, emotions are raw; for many, there is a sense of hopelessness, tears and questions about how the future will look. That is understandable and real and very ok.
But I also witnessed a work ethic beyond compare; unity, acts of kindness, volunteerism that can’t be measured, meals prepared and distributed, donations, community pride, faith, grit and determination. People showed up. That’s the foundation of Sioux County. The foundation of Iowa. The foundation of America. And that we can celebrate- even in the midst of questions and uncertainty.
As American law enforcement and citizen’s, we have an obligation to the men and women who fought and sacrificed to form this great nation, to our children and grandchildren who will carry on, to have the right to live freely and to be safe.
Enjoy the holiday, but remember its true significance, and those whose role is maintaining the freedoms that we all enjoy stateside. Please enjoy the festivities responsibly. If you’re traveling, buckle up, drive sober, and be mindful of others on the road. If you’re celebrating with fireworks, ensure you’re doing so safely and within the law. Stay safe, Sioux county. Stand strong. Recover and rebuild. Because you can. Find positive ways to celebrate the freedoms of the USA. Because the anchor still holds. I’ll end with this quote, “This nation will remain the land of the free as long as it continues to be the home of the brave.” Elmer Davis- reporter
