Three vehicles involved in motor vehicle accident east of Rock Valley- June 21

On Friday, June 21, at 4:09 p.m. the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office investigated a motor vehicle accident that occurred at the intersection of Highway 18 and Garfield Avenue, two miles east of Rock Valley, IA.

Breslyn Kooima, age 15,  of Rock Valley, IA, driving a 2020 Chevrolet Malibu westbound on Highway 18.Iris Mendoza, age 22, of Sheldon, IA, was driving a 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe westbound on Highway 18. Leena Phothisarn, age 29, of Rock Valley, IA, was diving a 2013 Chevrolet Equinox westbound on Highway 18 behind Mendoza. Kooima stopped for road construction, Mendoza stopped behind Kooima and Phothisarn struck Mendoza. Mendoza was pushed forward, striking Kooima.

Phothisarn and Herrera Mendoza were transported by Rock Valley Ambulance to Hegg Health Center for treatment of their injuries. Kooima and a passenger were transported by Hull Ambulance to Sioux Center Health for treatment of their injuries.

Damage to the Malibu was estimated at $15,000. The Hyundai sustained approximately $20,000 in damage. Damage to the Equinox was estimated at $15,000.

Phothisarn was cited for following to close and failure to provide proof of financial liability – accident. Mendoza was cited for failure to provide proof of financial liability – accident.

The sheriff’s office was assisted by Rock Valley Police Department, Rock Valley Fire Department, Rock Valley Ambulance and Hull Ambulance.
