Three involved in motor vehicle accident east of Rock Valley – May 16

On Thursday, May 16, at 7:38 a.m. the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office investigated a motor vehicle accident that occurred at the intersection of Highway 18 and Garfield Avenue, three miles east of Rock Valley, IA.

Kiara Hickey, age 17, of Doon, IA, was diving a 2016 Honda Accord southbound on Garfield Avenue; she stopped for a stop sign at Highway 18. Rhonda Vandenhull, age 62, of Archer, IA, was driving a 2024 Cadillac XT5 eastbound on Highway 18. Gilberto Martinez, age 61, of Rock Valley, was driving a 2018 Ford Escape northbound on Garfield Avenue; he stopped for a stop at Highway 18. Hickey entered the intersection where she and Vandenhull struck. After that collision, both Vandenhull and Hickey struck Martinez.

Vandenhull was transported by the Rock Valley Ambulance to Hegg Health Center for treatment of her injuries.

The Honda sustained approximately $9,000 in damage; the Cadillac sustained an estimated $13,000 in damage and the Ford sustained approximately $12,000 in damage.

Hickey was cited for failure to yield upon entering a through highway.

The sheriff’s office was assisted by the Rock Valley Police Department, Rock ValleyAmbulance, Rock Valley Fire Department and Sioux County Conservation.
