Commercial Motor Vehicle accident northeast of Hawarden – December 14

On Thursday, December 14, at 3:32 p.m., the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office investigated a commercial motor vehicle accident that occurred at the intersection of Cherry Avenue and 390th Street, five miles northeast of Hawarden, IA.

Tristan Van Wyk, age 21, of Alcester, SD was driving a 2004 Freightliner semi-tractor pulling a Smithco side dump trailer westbound on 390th  Street; he attempted to turn south onto Cherry Avenue when he lost control of the vehicle, entered the west ditch and rolled.

Van Wyk was tended to by Hawarden EMS and declined further medical attention.

The Freightliner sustained approximately $20,000 in damage; the trailer sustained approximately $1,000 in damage.

Van Wyk was cited for failure to maintain control of a motor vehicle.

The sheriff’s office was assisted by the Hawarden Police Department, Hawarden Fire Department and Hawarden Ambulance.
