Three vehicles involved in motor vehicle accident west of Boyden – December 12

On Tuesday, December 12, at 6:56 a.m., the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office responded to a motor vehicle accident that occurred at the intersection of Highway 18 and Jackson Avenue (County Road K-64), two miles west of Boyden, IA.

Wade Haarsma, age 60, of Boyden, was driving a 2011 Ford Ranger westbound on Highwy 18.  Kolby Heemskerk, age 16, of Sheldon, IA, was driving a 2016 Dodge Dart westbound behind Haarsma. David Van Egdom, age 57, of Hull, IA, was driving a 2011 Chevrolet Malibu eastbound on Highway 18. Haarsma stopped at the intersection of K-64 waiting for oncoming traffic to clear before turning south when Heemskerk struck Haarsma. Heemskerk lost control of the vehicle, entered the eastbound lane and struck Van Egdom.

Heemskerk and Van Egdom were transported by the Boyden Ambulance to the Sanford-Sheldon Hospital for treatment of their injuries. Haarsma declined further medical treatment.

Damage to the Ford was estimated at $8,000; the Dodge sustained an estimated $10,000 in damage and the Chevrolet sustained approximately $7,000 in damage.

Heemskerk was cited for following too close.

The sheriff’s office was assisted by the Iowa State Patrol, Boyden Fire Department and Boyden Ambulance.
