Sioux County, meet McGrath, our first-ever certified Professional Therapy K9!
McGrath’s trainer from C.A.R.E.S., Inc.: (Canine Assistance Rehabilitation & Education Services) of Concordia, KS, says he absolutely “loves to be loved” and we think that will be a fitting quality for his job description!
McGrath has now joined his handler, Deputy Jessica Dorhout, and is ready for duty in Sioux County. McGrath will join Deputy Dorhout while patrolling as well as joining her when she conducts her School Resource Officer duties. We look forward to seeing how McGrath can enhance communication, de-escalate difficult situations and aide peaceful conclusions in any of these interactions.
McGrath spent his first 18 months learning his service and social skills in three different prison settings.
Sheriff Jamie Van Voorst said, “this is a groundbreaking step in that it’s been about a one year process from its inception until now. This service will vastly expand our connections with those who will benefit from the calming approach and benefits a certified therapy K9 can give. This is a big step in bridging law enforcement with special needs situations.”
When you see them around, make sure you “love him up,” shake his paw and welcome him to Sioux County! 💙🐾🖤
