Vehicle nearly strikes gas pump in Sioux Center; leads to arrest of driver and alcohol violation of passenger.

On Monday, June 26, at 5:26 a.m., the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office arrested Santos Martin-Martin, age 23, of Sioux Center, IA.

The arrest stemmed from a report of a suspected intoxicated male that nearly struck a gas pump at the Shell Gas Station, in Sioux Center.

Upon further investigation, when officers arrived at Shell, the driver had fled the area on foot, leaving behind his passenger, Maria Lopez. Lopez admitted to officers that Martin-Martin had been consuming alcohol, but was unsure why he had fled on foot.

Lopez was cited for open container and transported home. Upon arrival at Lopez’s residence, the deputy noticed a suspicious male matching the description of Martin-Martin outside of Lopez’s residence. Martin-Martin again fled on foot, but was apprehended a short time later; deputies suspected that Martin-Martin was under the influence of alcohol.

Martin-Martin was transported to the Sioux County Jail where he was charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, public intoxication and interference with official acts. While taking Martin-Martin into custody, a 2019 Sioux County arrest warrant for Martin-Martin for failure to appear – operating while intoxicated, was also discovered.

This was a joint case worked between the sheriff’s office and the Sioux Center Police Department.
