Traffic stop south of Hospers leads to two arrests – February 17

On Friday, February 17, at 3:05 a.m., the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office arrested Kari Kunst, age 33, and Philex Stewart, age 33, both of Mora, MN.

The arrest stemmed from a traffic stop that occurred Highway 60, four miles south of Hospers, IA, after a deputy checked Stewart’s vehicle traveling 83 mph in 65 mph zone. During the stop, the  deputy noticed the odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. Upon further investigation, deputies discovered a container that had a green leafy substance that later tested positive for THC and drug paraphernalia. Deputies also suspected that Stewart was under the influence of marijuana.

Stewart and Kunst were transported to the Sioux County Jail where they were charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a controlled substance. Additionally, Stewart was charged with operating a motor vehicle whichever intoxicated (drugged).

The sheriffs office was assisted by the Orange City-Alton Police Department.
