Motorist assist south of Rock Valley leads to arrest – December 30

On Friday, December 30, at 1:53 p.m., the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office arrested Michael Smit, age 64, of Rock Valley, IA.

The arrest stemmed from a motorist assist incident where a deputy on patrol saw a vehicle stuck in snow on a level B minimum maintenance road south of Rock Valley. When checking on the vehicle, the deputy found Smit inside.

Upon further investigation, the deputy discovered Smit had been driving the vehicle when it became stuck, determined that his driver’s license was suspended, failed to have SR22 insurance and the vehicle registration was expired.

Smit was transported to the Sioux County Jail where he was charged with operating a motor vehicle with a suspended  driver’s license, failure to provide proof of SR22 insurance, a citation was cited for operating a motor vehicle with expired registration.
