On Monday, December 12, at 5:59 p.m., the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office investigated a motor vehicle accident that occurred on Highway 10, three miles east of Alton, IA.
Cristian Maldonado-Mejia, age 25, of Jefferson, IA, was driving a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado eastbound on Highway 10. Dean Bunkers, age 61, of Granville, IA, was driving a 2018 Jeep Wrangler westbound on Highway 10. Maldonado-Mejia lost control of his vehicle and struck Bunkers.
Bunkers and a passenger in the Jeep along with Maldonado-Mejia and two passengers in the Chevrolet were transported by ambulance to Orange City Area Health for treatment of their injuries. The passenger in the Wrangler, Brenda Bunkers, age 61, of Granville, was also transported with Dean Bunkers to the Orange City Hospital by ambulance.
The Jeep sustained approximately $20,000 in damage. The Chevrolet sustained approximately $10,000 in damage.
Maldonado-Mejia was cited for operating a motor vehicle without having a valid driver’s license.
The sheriff’s office was assisted by the Alton Fire Department, Alton Ambulance, Granville Fire Department, Granville Ambulance, Orange City Ambulance, Hospers Ambulance and Orange City Police Department.
