Motor vehicle accident reported by smartphone application west of Sioux Center – October 7

On Friday, October 7, at 6:26 p.m., the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office investigated a motor vehicle accident that occurred on Elmwood Avenue, five miles west of Sioux Center, IA.

The accident was automatically reported to Sioux County Communications by the smartphone app, “Life360”, after a crash was detected by one of its subscribers after they entered a ditch on Elmwood Avenue.

Filiberto Mancilla-Lopez, 15, of Sioux Center, was driving a 2000 Dodge Stratus northbound on Elmwood Avenue when he swerved to avoid striking an animal on the roadway, lost control of the vehicle and entered the west ditch.

No injuries were reported.

The Dodge sustained approximately $1,500 in damage.

Mancilla-Lopez was cited for violation of instructional permit and failure to maintain control of a motor vehicle.
