Bicyclist struck in motor vehicle accident north of Sheldon – September 20

On Tuesday, September 20, at 5:20 p.m., the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office investigated a motor vehicle accident involving a bicyclist that occurred on 280th Street, four miles north of Sheldon, IA.

Douglas Roth, age 55, of George, IA, was driving a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix westbound on 280th Street. Michael Ahlers, age 59, of Sheldon, was riding a bicycle westbound on 280th Street. Roth attempted to pass Ahlers and struck the bicycle.

Ahlers was transported by Sheldon Ambulance to Sanford Sheldon Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Damage to the Pontiac was estimated at $1,500; the bike sustained approximately $5,500 in damage.

Roth was cited for operating a motor vehicle without insurance and operating a motor vehicle too close to a bicyclist.

The sheriff’s office was assisted by Sheldon Fire Department, Sheldon Ambulance and the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office.
