Motor vehicle accident south of Sheldon – September 15

On Thursday, September 15, at 5:37 p.m., the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office investigated a motor vehicle accident that occurred on Highway 60, two miles south of Sheldon, IA.

Paula Haarsma, age 55, of Sioux Center, IA, was driving a 2007 GMC Envoy northbound on Highway 60. Leah Herda, age 42, of Alton, IA, was driving a 2014 Nissan Armada southbound on Highway 60. Haarsma lost control of her vehicle, crossed the median and struck Herda; after the accident, both vehicles entered the west ditch. 

Haarsma was transported by the Sheldon Ambulance to Sanford Sheldon Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries. Herda was transported by the Sheldon Ambulance to Orange City Area Health for treatment of her injuries.

The sheriff’s office was assisted by the Iowa State Patrol, Sheldon Police Department, Sheldon Fire Department and Sheldon Ambulance. 


The accident remains under investigation.
