Recently, our School Resource Officer, Deputy Waylon Pollema, helped lead a crime scene investigation (CSI) activity with Mr. John Holwerda with his law class at Unity Christian High School in Orange City, IA.
Over the course of two weeks, students investigated a mock crime that occurred using evidence, interviews, and collaboration with classmates. The students had the opportunity to learn about the search warrant application process, interview role-playing suspects, compare fingerprints and other areas of a law enforcement investigation.
In addition to the activity, the law class also was able to attend a recent murder trial at the Sioux County Courthouse. They also had the opportunity to have the Judge as well as both the prosecuting and defense attorneys involved in the murder trial speak to them.
Sheriff Dan Altena and Captain Jamie Van Voorst came to their classroom and give them an administrative perspective on these types of investigations; the students had some great questions for them.
Pollema said, “I look forward to these activities where students can be engaged and experience law-related education in a real-world application.” Holwerda, Pollema and some law class students are already planning for next semester’s law class by developing a brand-new crime scene scenario students haven’t seen before.
