On Sunday, September 26 at 3:56 p.m., the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office investigated a motor vehicle accident that occurred at the intersection of Hickory Avenue and 390th Street, one mile east of Sioux Center, IA.
Joleen Vermeer, age 80, of Sioux Center, was driving 2020 Ford Explorer southbound on Hickory Avenue; she slowed to turn east onto 390th Street. Nolan Geerdes, age 24, of George, IA was driving a 2005 GMC Sierra southbound on Hickory Avenue following Vermeer. Vermeer started to turn left as Geerdes attempted to pass and the two struck. Geerdes lost control of his vehicle, entered the east ditch and rolled.
Three passengers in the GMC were transported by the Sioux Center Ambulance to Sioux Center Health for treatment of their injuries.
Penni Gengler, age 28, and Frederick Buckalew, age 45, both of George and passengers in the GMC were each cited for having an open of alcohol in a motor vehicle. Nolan Geerdes was cited for passing in an intersection.
The sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Sioux Center Police Department, Sioux Center Fire Department and Sioux Center Ambulance.
The accident remains under investigation.
