On Friday, May 21, at 3:50 p.m,, the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office investigated a motor vehicle accident that occurred at the intersection of 370th Street and Hickory Avenue, two miles northeast of Sioux Center, IA.
James Keizer, age 74, of Hull, IA was driving a 2015 Blue Bird school bus eastbound on 370th Street. Anneliese Vander Waal, age 17, of Orange City, IA was driving a 2012 Jeep Liberty eastbound on 370th Street behind Keizer. Keizer stopped for other vehicles before attempting to turn north onto Hickory Avenue and Vander Waal struck the school bus.
There were no students on the bus at the time of the accident. Keizer was transported by private vehicle to Hegg-Memorial Health Center in Rock Valley for treatment of his injuries. Vander Waal was trapped in her vehicle and required mechanical extrication from members of the Sioux Center Fire Department. Following extrication, she was transported by the Sioux Center Ambulance to Sioux Center Health; she was later flown to Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD, for further medical attention.
The school bus sustained approximately $15,ooo in damage. The Jeep sustained an estimated $20,000 in damage.
The sheriff’s office was assisted by its Technical Accident Investigation Unit, Sioux Center Police Department, Sioux Center Fire Department and Sioux Center Ambulance.
