Fatal motor vehicle accident northwest of Sioux Center – April 18

*UPDATED RELEASE*

On Sunday, April 18, at 11:41 a.m., the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office began an investigation of a motor vehicle accident that occurred on Elmwood Avenue (County Road K-30), six miles south of Rock Valley, IA.

Dyson Kooima, age 19, of Rock Valley, IA was driving a 2006 Ford Fusion northbound on Elmwood Avenue. Jana Haglund, age 55, of Sioux Center, IA was driving a 2007 Cobra Sunset motorcycle southbound on Elmwood Avenue. Haglund lost control of the motorcycle, entered the northbound lane and struck Kooima. Haglund was ejected from the motorcycle and entered the east ditch.

Haglund was pronounced dead as a result of her injuries. Kooima was transported by the Sioux Center Ambulance to Sioux Center Health for treatment of minor injuries.

The Ford sustained approximately $8,000 in damage. The Cobra sustained an estimated $2,000 in damage.

The sheriff’s office was assisted by the Iowa State Patrol, Sioux Center Police Department, Sioux Center Fire Department and Sioux Center Ambulance.

On Sunday, April 18, at 11:41 a.m., the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office began an investigation of a motor vehicle accident that occurred on Elmwood Avenue (County Road K-30), six miles south of Rock Valley, IA.

Two vehicles; a motorcycle and a passenger car, were involved in the accident and one of the drivers died as a result of their injuries.

Names are being withheld pending notification of family.

The accident remains under investigation.
