On Tuesday, April 13, at 8:18 a.m., the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office investigated a motor vehicle accident that occurred on Highway 10, two miles west of Orange City, IA.
Lucas Van Berkel, age 17, of Sioux Center, IA, was driving a 2008 Nissan Altima eastbound on Highway 10. Issac Baart, age 17, of Sioux Center was driving a 2006 Audi Quattro eastbound on Highway 10 behind Van Berkel. Kate Zwart, age 16, of Sioux Center was driving a 2013 Chevrolet Impala eastbound on Highway 10 behind Baart. Another eastbound vehicle ahead of Van Berkel slowed for oncoming traffic before attempting a left turn onto a business driveway. Van Berkel and Baart slowed behind that vehicle and Zwart struck the Audi. The impact pushed Baart forward, striking Van Berkel.
No injuries were reported.
The Nissan sustained an estimated $1,000 in damage. The Audi sustained an estimated $1,500 in damage. The Chevrolet sustained approximately $6,000 in damage.
Zwart was cited for following too close.
The sheriff’s office was assisted by the Iowa State Patrol.
