Fatal motor vehicle accident near Alton – January 14 *UPDATED*

On Thursday, January 14, at 4:51 p.m., the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office investigated a fatal motor vehicle accident that occurred on Highway 10 (460th Street), three miles east of Alton, IA.

Josiah Gonzalez, age 18, of Granville, IA was driving a 2007 Chevrolet Malibu westbound on Highway 10. Barry Galles, age 45, of Remsen, IA was driving a 2019 Ford F-250 eastbound on Highway 10. Gonzalez lost control of his vehicle, entered the eastbound lane and the two struck.

Both drivers were transported by ambulance services from Alton and Orange City to Orange City Area Health System where Gonzalez was pronounced dead as a result of his injuries and Galles was treated for minor injuries and released.

The Chevrolet sustained approximately $5,000 in damage. The Ford sustained an estimated $20,000 in damage.

The sheriff’s office was assisted by the Orange City Police Department, Alton Fire Department, Alton Ambulance, Orange City Ambulance and the Iowa State Patrol.

The accident remains under investigation.

On Thursday, January 14, at 4:51 p.m., the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office investigated a motor vehicle accident that occurred on Highway 10, three miles east of Alton, IA.

Two vehicles were involved in the accident and one of the drivers died as a result of their injuries.

Names are being withheld pending notification of family.

The accident remains under investigation.
