On Tuesday, September 22, fire chiefs representing each fire department in Sioux County requested the Iowa State Fire Marshal to prohibit open burning in Sioux County. The State Fire Marshal found that conditions are such that open burning constitutes a danger to life and property.
Effective Wednesday, September 23, at 6:00 a.m., no person in Sioux County shall engage in open burning, until such time as conditions dangerous to life and property no longer exist. Iowa code 100.40 outlines the regulations regarding an open burn ban. A violation of this section is a simple misdemeanor.
Local fire chiefs encourage farmers and producers to plan ahead and have a tractor and disk nearby while harvesting. Watching the forecast and wind speeds are also ways to mitigate the fire danger.
