On Sunday, August 16 at 11:44 a.m., the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office investigated a motor vehicle accident that occurred at the intersection of Elmwood Avenue and 340th Street, three miles south of Rock Valley, IA.
Vaida Van Der Brink, age 19, of Rock Valley was driving a 2006 Mercury Milan eastbound on 340th Street; she turned and began driving northbound on Elmwood Avenue. Yovani Lopez-Chilel, age 18, of Sioux Center, IA was driving a 2012 Lincoln MKX northbound on Elmwood Avenue. As Lopez-Chilel approached Van Der Brink, he lost control of his vehicle, entered the west ditch, struck a MidAmerican Energy Company electrical utility pole and rolled.
Lopez-Chilel was transported by the Rock Valley Ambulance to Hegg Memorial Hospital for treatment of his injuries.
The Lincoln sustained approximately $10,000 in damage. The electrical property sustained an estimated $5,000 in damage.
Lopez-Chilel was cited operating a motor vehicle without a valid driver’s license and no proof of motor vehicle liability insurance-accident related.
The sheriff’s office was assisted by the Rock Valley Fire Department and Rock Valley Ambulance.
